Wilfred C. Litchfield, age 88, of Manchester, formerly of Highland Park, died Friday at his home. Born in Kingston, Ontario Canada, he came to the United States at a young age. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1940 and lived in Highland Park for most of his life before moving to Sunset Beach, NC and finally four years ago to Manchester, N.J. He enjoyed summers at Sea Isle City, N.J.
Mr. Litchfield served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Reconnaissance Sergeant with Company B 612 Tank Destroyer Battalion. He experienced many battles including those in Omaha Beach, Central Europe, Normandy, Ardennes, Northern France and Rhineland and the Battle of the Bulge. He received the American Service Medal, the European-African-Middle East Service Medal as well as the Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Litchfield had served 27 years as a police officer for the Highland Park Police Department retiring as a Sergeant in 1973. Later, he went on to work as a superintendent for the New Brunswick Theological Seminary.
He was pre-deceased by his wife of 68 years, Katherine, who died in July of last year.
Wilfred is survived by his children; Duane Litchfield and his wife, Jura, of Kennebunkport, ME, Gregg Litchfield and his wife, Barbara, of Loveland, OH, Douglas Litchfield and his wife, Linda, of Coplay, PA and Nancy Galayda and her husband, James, of Highland Park, eight grandchildren, Rosalind, Katherine, Jonathan, Christopher, Casey, Jesse, James and Kristen, two great-grandchildren, Alison and Corsten, and his caregiver and long-time friend, Vera Douglas.
