Sophia Gorman, age 89, of Edison, died Monday evening, October 19, 2009 at St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick. Born in Raleigh, West Virginia, the daughter of a coal miner, she had lived in Jersey City for many years before moving to Edison in 1960. She was a dedicated employee with Korvettes'Store for several years. Sophia was an avid bird lover as well as someone who took great pride in her garden. She will always be remembered as being a warm and loving person and one who cherished her family. She was a communicant of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Highland Park and served as President of their Altar Rosary Society. She was also active with the Highland Park Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Gorman in 1989. Sophia is survived by her son, John Gorman and his wife, Vicki of New Brunswick, two daughters; Dolores Peters and her husband, Richard of South River and Sandra LaPlante, and her husband, Fred, of Jacksonville, FL, a sister-in-law, Eleanor Lagowski of West Virgina, her grandchildren, Valerie Gorman, Jay and his wife, Amy Gorman, Christopher, Brianne, and Kacie Peters, Michael and Chelsea LaPlante, and two great-grandchildren, Devin and Riley Gorman.
