Robert G. Roth, a Professor of English at Middlesex County College for over forty years, died at age 70 on Sunday, April 20, from complications of stomach cancer.
Bob, as he was known to family and friends, fought the cancer valiantly and optimistically for a year. Most did not realize he was ill, as he worked to stay in shape, always smiling and keeping up his exercise regimen with his many friends at physical therapy.
Born in Providence on August 3, 1943, Bob lived in Rhode Island with his parents Alfred and Ruth (Spahn) Roth, his brother Norman, and his sister Dashka until he left to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He graduated from MIT in 1966 and received his Ed.D in English Education from Rutgers University in 1986.
Bob was a dedicated teacher who believed in the power of education, the importance of community and the love of family and friends. He always had time for his students—supporting, counseling and cheering them on when they succeeded. He combined his dedication to education and the community by serving on the Highland Park, NJ Board of Education for six years. Bob believed in progressive political causes and worked with several organizations to further them.
Bob lived in Highland Park with his wife of thirty-six years, Susan Harned Roth. Together, they raised Bob's stepdaughter, Leslie Vogel Lee, and their son, Brandon Roth. Bob was also delighted to reconnect with his daughter from a previous marriage, Yvonne Honigsberg. He spent his retirement years visiting, cooking for, and caring for his children and grandchildren.
Bob is survived and greatly missed by his wife Susan, his son Brandon, his daughter Yvonne, his stepdaughter Leslie, his grandchildren Taran, Aysia, and Tyler, his brother Norman Roth, and his sister Dashka Roth Lehmann.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 27th at the Jaqui-Kuhn Funeral Home, 17 South Adelaide Avenue, Highland Park.
