Martha Schumacher Obituary

Martha Schumacher, 98, formerly of Highland Park, NJ entered into eternal rest on July 4, 2025.

Born on a farm in East Germany on March 28, 1927 Martha was one of nine children to Andreas and Marta.  She survived WWII as a teenager escaping after the Russians invaded her hometown and took her home.  She had many stories of her strength and brave life she had to endure.

In 1956 Martha entered the USA through the help of her aunts who were Catholic Nuns.  She got a job at St. Clare's Hospital in Denville, NJ where she learned English and became an EKG and EEG technician.  This is where she met her husband, John.  They moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where their first child was born, Carl.  About a year later they moved to Highland Park, NJ where they had a daughter, Susan.  Martha went back to work for Rutgers University and retired when she was 84 years old.  Martha had a strong work ethnic and was a devoted Catholic.  She was a long-time parishioner of St. Paul's RC Church in Highland Park, NJ.

Martha was a devoted mother, a cherished friend and a beacon of love in her children's lives.  Her strength in times of adversity inspired us all, showing us how to face life's challenges with grace, compassion, and determination.  Martha was a excellent bowler and loved being part of a bowling league.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, John (1987) and her son, Carl Schumacher and a grandson, Luke Thiel.  May they find each other and all the other family and friends among the angels in Heaven.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Thiel and her husband, Larry Thiel, of Edison; five grandchildren: Christopher Schumacher and his wife of North Carolina, Leighann Westcott and her husband of Florida, Larry Thiel III and his wife of New Jersey, Monika Thiel of New Jersey, and Travis Thiel of North Carolina.  Also, Martha is survived by many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins and beloved friends.  Martha will be truly missed, and her legacy will live on for generations.  Her compassion will endure in our hearts forever.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorial contributions can be made in her name to Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) and / or Central Jersey Oasis (centraljersey@youroasisadvisor.com)
