John Francis Thompson, Jr., 65, died suddenly on Friday, March 10 at his home in Edison, NJ.
John was an extraordinary musician, bassist, and instructor. He studied music at The Collective School of Music in Manhattan. John was a former student of Jaco Pastorius, Miroslav Vitous, Rich Samalin, Percy Jones, and more. Most recently he was in the bands, On the Edge, Rhyme and Reason, Dynamixxx, and Kevin & Kompany. John was the owner of NJ Bass Academy on YouTube and Patreon. He also hosted the Podcast into the Mind of Music and gave bass lessons for over 40 years.
John was also a talented wood finisher for The Rich Touch for over 20 years.
Mr. Thompson was predeceased by his parents: John Francis Thompson Sr. and Katherine Tripod.
John is survived by his daughter, Dr. Serena Thompson, of Phoenix, AZ and a son, Dylan Thompson, of Edison, NJ. Marion Madaio, his former wife, also remained in his life as a best friend. John loved his children, playing the bass, motorcycles, martial arts, and his cat, Bella. There are numerous cousins, friends, and bandmates surviving.
Relatives and friends can pay their respects on Sunday, March 19, 2023 between the hours of 3 pm and 7 pm at the Jaqui-Kuhn Funeral Home, 17 S. Adelaide Avenue, Highland Park, NJ 08904. Parking is available behind the funeral home or on S. Adelaide Avenue.
