Jewel Seehaus-Fisher, 84, of Highland Park passed away January 30 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. A retired teacher in the Matawan, NJ school system, she was the Artistic Director of Teachers Theater and workshop teacher of playwriting. Her plays, Fanny and Walt, Wilde in Leadville, Wilde Night in the Rockies, My Sister Underground, Gesualdo, Amandla, and Mark Twain and the General have been produced in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and in Cranford and Madison, NJ, in addition to many shorter works. She has also collaborated with Robert Butts to write the libretto for several operas. Her plays were finalists with the Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Samuel French New Play Festival, the Playing the Lake Festival, and the Moondance Festival. She took First Place in the Southwest Festival of New Plays, received a NJ State Council on the Arts Fellowship for Individual Artists, and received a New Jersey State Fellowship in Playwriting twice. Jewel was a member of NJ Dramatists, Drama Guild, Women's Theater Company, the Teachers Theater, and the International Centre for Women Playwrights. She was also an adjunct professor of English at Rutgers University.
Jewel was an extraordinarily loving and vital person, who brought infectious enthusiasm to her myriad interests. She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Mavis Seehaus, of NY, NY, three beloved step-sons and their spouses, three grandchildren, and a multitude of adored colleagues and friends.
A memorial service is scheduled for noon on Sunday, March 22nd at the Kirkpatrick Chapel, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J.
