George Claflen Obituary

George L. Claflen, age 89, died Wednesday, November 10th at the Parker Home in New Brunswick. Born in New York City, he lived in New Brunswick for 58 years. During World War II, he was a first Lieutenant in the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Group of the 9th Air Force in the European theater. A graduate of Linden High School and Rutgers University, he was a civil engineer and the retired executive vice-president of Hess Brothers Contractors and Engineers, a regional heavy construction firm. He was active in the National Society of Professional Engineers where he was the Raritan Valley Chapter President in 1962 and won the state-wide Professional Engineers in Construction award in 1983.

Mayor Pat Sheehan appointed him to the New Brunswick School Board in 1970 where he was president from 1973-75. He was also active in the Associated General Contractors of NJ, where he served as president in 1983-84, was recognized with the Project Build Eagle award in 1990, and was made an honorary trustee. Rutgers University honored him as a “Loyal Son” in 2003 for his work in alumni affairs. He was an active member of St. John the Baptist R.C. Church where he was president of the Holy Name Society.

He was pre-deceased by his parents, Royal Vincent and Catherine McCormick Claflen and his sister, Jane McCarthy. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Cecilia Blundell Claflen and his son, George, Jr., who is an architect in Philadelphia.

Relatives and friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, November 14th at the Jaqui-Kuhn Funeral Home, 17 South Adelaide Avenue, Highland Park. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 15th at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, New Brunswick. Interment will follow at Resurrection Burial Park, Piscataway. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater NJ Chapter, 400 Morris Ave, Suite 251, Denville, N.J. 07834 or to St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, 29 Abeel Street, New Brunswick, N.J. 08901.
