Frank W. Perger, age 94, of Highland Park, died on May 6, 2011, at his home.
Frank was born in Union and was a graduate of Union High School. He played soccer with the German American Sport Club of Elizabeth (1935 State Champions) and was selected for the U.S. Olympic team, but he missed the opportunity to go when he broke a leg in his position as goalie.
Frank served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He had many close calls and stories to tell about his service across Europe during WWII. He was an avid photographer during the war. In the ‘60s, he won awards for his underwater photography.
Frank moved to Highland Park in 1952 and, shortly thereafter, he and his wife Ruth became owners of the The Homestead Tap. Recognized by Oui Magazine in 1981 as one of America’s top ten taverns, The Homestead was the hub of social activity in Highland Park until its closing in the 1990s. Frank’s humor and cheer, his “Perger Burgers and Fries,” combined with Ruth’s festive seasonal decorations, made The Homestead the home away from home for young and old alike. It was a place to watch a game, to celebrate a special occasion, and on snowy nights, many residents braved the storm to walk to The Homestead for warm food, good company, and fun! At its closing, Frank was honored at a surprise gathering of 200 of his friends and former customers, who all cherished memories of Frank and The Homestead.
Frank loved aviation and flying and sold his Cessna only a few years ago.
Frank served on the Highland Park Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years.
He was a member of the Reformed Church of Highland Park.
Frank was pre-deceased by his wife, Ruth, in 2000.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Perger, of Edison; a sister, Margaret Moyer, of Union, N.J.; a brother, Stephen Perger, of Palm Harbor, Florida; and nieces and nephews.
