Eileen Kuhn Obituary

Eileen Jaqui Kuhn, 88, of Metuchen died Thursday, March 28, at home with her family by her side. She was born in Newark on July 16, 1924, to William H. and Agnes Efinger Jaqui. She grew up in Highland Park, graduated from Highland Park High School in 1942 and the Katharine Gibbs School in New York City in 1943 at a time when its students wore proper white gloves and hats.
She worked for 10 years as a secretary in the insurance office of D. Carl McCormick. In 1970 she and her husband Jim took over her family’s business, the Jaqui Funeral Home in Highland Park, as co-owners. It was subsequently renamed the Jaqui-Kuhn Funeral Home, and Eileen and Jim ran their business together until 1995 when they retired to Metuchen.
Eileen loved being with her family, flowers and working in her garden, sitting on her porch, watching the Yankees and discussing politics at length. She was a wonderful baker and decorated a glorious Christmas tree. She was a former member of the Trowel Club of New Brunswick and chairwoman of the Highland Park Historical Commission. She was a parishioner of St. Paul’s R.C. Church in Highland Park for most of her life.
Eileen met Jim when they were 10 years old and each remembers the moment. They married on May 19, 1951, and have been a devoted couple ever since.
Eileen was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Ruth Skudlarek.
She is survived by Jim, her husband and love of her life; her three daughters, M. Patricia Kuhn and her husband Bert Dice-Goldberg of Highland Park, Michele Jaqui Kuhn of Metuchen and Maureen N. Kuhn and her partner Norna Fairbanks of Highland Park; her two grandchildren, David M. Kuhn and Sarah Dice-Goldberg; and 22 nieces and nephews from the Kuhn, Skudlarek and Santucci families.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 1, at the Jaqui-Kuhn Funeral Home, 17 S. Adelaide Ave., Highland Park. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2 at Transfiguration of the Lord Parish, St. Paul’s R.C. Church, Raritan Avenue, Highland Park. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Piscataway.
Contributions may be made in Eileen’s memory to the Greater Plainfield Habitat for Humanity, 2 Randolph Road, Plainfield, NJ 07060 or Elijah’s Promise, 211 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick, NJ 08901.
