Barry M. Criss, age 61, of Edison, died Monday, January 7, 2013 at St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick.
Born in New Brunswick, he lived in Highland Park and Edison all of his life.
Barry had worked as a truck driver for City Suburban Delivery Service in Edison.
As an assistant scout master with Boy Scouts of America Troop #53 in Fords, Barry has guided countless young boys as they matured into young men. He was an usher and communicant at Transfiguration of the Lord Parish, St. Paul the Apostle R.C. Church Worship Site in Highland Park. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Barry was a member of the Highland Park First Aid Squad for 42 years and has handled over 7000 calls. Barry’s role in Highland Park extended beyond dramatic rescues and delivering babies. Recognizing the vital importance of preventive safety practices and education, Barry has instructed middle school students for many years in CPR and first aid, and in 2003 he starred in a documentary on drunk driving shown to Highland Park High School students. As an active member of the community, Barry has served for many years in the borough’s Office of Emergency Management, ensuring the preparedness for hurricanes, fires, and other disasters.
Barry was pre-deceased by his son, Peter in 1984, a brother, Paul Criss and his father, Robert Criss, Sr.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Lou Davis Criss, a son, Scott Criss, his mother, Harriett Criss, two brothers, Robert Criss, Jr. and William Criss, and two sisters, Janet and Joan Criss. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call from 4-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Jaqui-Kuhn Funeral Home, 17 South Adelaide Avenue, Highland Park. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Transfiguration of the Lord Parish, St. Paul the Apostle R.C. Church Worship Site, Highland Park. Interment will follow at Resurrection Burial Park, Piscataway. Memorial contributions may be made to the Highland Park First Aid Squad, 128 South Eleventh Avenue, Highland Park, N.J. 08904
