Arthur Smith Obituary

Arthur M. Smith, age 76, of Highland Park, passed away peacefully late Wednesday, June 12, 2013 after a ten-month battle with lung cancer.

Born in New Brunswick in 1937, he was a life-long resident of Highland Park. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1954. He won M.V.P. for baseball and was offered contracts with two major league baseball teams. Art chose to attend college instead and graduated from Saint Peter’s College in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. Later, he utilized his baseball skills by coaching little league teams in Highland Park for over 25 years. Art loved watching his grandchildren play sports.

Art served in the United States Army and the N.J. National Guard from 1958-1964.

He was employed by the State of New Jersey – Department of Labor for over 38 years. Art managed several unemployment offices before becoming a grievance officer for the Department in Trenton. He retired in 2001.

Art had served as an usher for many years and was a lifetime communicant at St. Paul the Apostle R.C. Church in Highland Park. He was a charter member of St. Paul the Apostle Knights of Columbus Council #6306. He served three times on the Parish council and was twice president of the Holy Name Society.

He was an avid runner for over 30 years who ran for approximately 30,000 miles. Art loved horse racing, writing “Letters to the Editor,” and was a history buff.

Art lived for Philadelphia and Notre Dame Sports. He referred to Philadelphia as “Back Home.”

He was pre-deceased by his parents, Elizabeth Meade Smith (1958) and Arthur F. Smith (1976) and his son, Eric J. Smith (2004).

He is survived by his wife of 49 1/2years, Donna Templin Smith, a son, Douglas E. Smith of Highland Park, a daughter, Tracy Douches and her husband, Brian, of Edison, and six grandchildren, Brett (Ski) and Bradley (Bradford) Douches,Jacob, Josh, Jonah and Jaynie Smith.

Viewing hours will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, June 16th and from 9:00 - 9:30 a.m. Monday, June 17th at the Jaqui-Kuhn Funeral Home, 17 South Adelaide Avenue, Highland Park. A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 17th at the Transfiguration of the Lord Parish, St. Paul the Apostle Church in Highland Park followed by interment at St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Brunswick.
